Many years ago when I first started in the world of being an author there were no resources for indie authors. Well, there were but it was a joke. There were publishing houses, and still are, called Vanity Presses. These houses would rope a hungry author in have them sign a contract and then take advantage. They still do.

They would state they did not charge for publishing but when the contract was signed, the author had to agree to purchase copious amounts of books they would never sell. The cost would be in the thousands of dollars.

Then there was the so called indie author publishing house that guarented they could sell your book. Many of them are no longer in business as they took the “publishing” money and then didn’t give the author any royalites.

I have been in this business for almost 20 years, I have seen publishers come and go. I have seen indie authors quit because they became discouraged. Everyone wants to be published by one of the big 6 traditional houses. That is not going to happen. First one must have an agent which cost money. Second agents read manuscripts they like and those are the one they push. Third, tradional publishing houses take an author’s book and has their editors re-write most of it, put on the cover they want to see and basiclly the author loses control of their book. Sure they make lots of money. But then they are forced to continue cranking out books that have no soul. I have read so many of them in my life time. The storyline becomes the same storyline with different characters, and places. There is no heart in the book. Sad but true.

I say all that to say this, when my sweet publisher died, I needed a way to publish not only my work, but two friends of mine who had used this publisher. Hence, Midnight Publishing was born. At the time I did not know there was another one out there with the same name. Sadly, that house does not have such a good reputation.

I am not in it to make millions of dollars that will never happen. I am here to help other authors succeed in making their dream real. That dream is to see their work in print. To leave something of themself behind. Maybe to make a difference in someone else’s life.

In the indie world, if you come into it with the idea that you are going to get rich, then you either need to rethink your dream or change the expectation. As indie’s we write because if we don’t the voices in our heads will drive us mad.

As you can see from the covers of the books, we take great care when creating them. What most folks don’t know is the cover is the heart of a book. If someone sees that cover and takes the time to pick it up and read the back, 9 times out of 10 they will by the book. The cover should give a short synopsis of what is to come.

Designing covers is like painting. It takes time and it takes commitment. It is not an easy task. Sometimes it can be a challenge. Anyone can slap together artwork, but it takes someone who sees the soul of the book to make that cover pop. That is what we do here.

As an artist and a photographer, I see things in a book many may miss. That book is more than just words on paper, it is the heart and soul of it’s author. It speaks to me.

Formating a book is a great challenge, most first time authors want to make the book pretty. They want to use strange font, graphics, you name it. That is not good. Remember a reader is not interested in what kind of font or graphics are on the page. They want the story. They don’t want to have to try and figure out what they are reading because the font is out there or work their way past graphics. It is our job to make that book simple, the font should always be 12 New Times Roman. It is clear and consise. Also, the larger the print, the more expensive a book becomes. We here at Midnight Publishing want our readers to be able to purchase a book without breaking the bank.

We create all the publications in all formats, paperback, kindle, audible and hardback. Again, we want to offer our readers all possible opprotunity to enjoy our work.
