Nita Owenby

Nita Welch Owenby was born in Franklin, N.C. , to William Furman Welch and Ethel Adalaid Roper Welch, the fifth of six children.  She graduated from Franklin High School, Cecil’s Business College in Asheville, N.C., and also has an associate degree in psychology through the University of California, earned while living in Tucson, Arizona.  Among a variety of jobs, she has worked for the FBI in Washington, D.C.; supervised at Smoky Mountain Enterprises in Asheville, N.C. helping to establish the company; and managed an investment and group insurance agency in Dallas, Texas.  After the death of her father in 1995, she took early retirement and moved back to their farm in Franklin to take care of her mother and the  home place.

Nita and her husband, Roy, had their retirement home built on top of a hill on the farm, which borders the Little Tennessee River and Rose Creek, where they now live.  Her pride and joy is making and refurbishing dolls and hand sewing their clothes.  At last count, she had over 500 dolls and her collection continues to grow.
